Common mistakes beginners make when trading skins

Errors in trading skins are surprisingly monotonous. Almost everyone loses money in the same eight ways, and almost everyone thinks that this will never happen to them. Let's look at each one with a price tag.
Eight mistakes that everyone repeats: from buying on hype and believing in one chart to lack of accounting. With an explanation of what each costs.
1. Ignoring costs when calculating profit
Bought for 1,000, sold for 1,100 - it seems like I earned a hundred. In fact, selling in Steam gives about 13% commission, and from 1,100 you will get about 957. You didn’t earn, you lost 43 rubles.
The rule that you need to learn before your first transaction is: the break-even sale price is 15% higher than the purchase price. Anything below is a loss no matter what it looks like.
2. Buying after a sudden price spike
An update has been released, skin has risen in price by 40% in two days, and it seems that we need to be in time. You can usually only make it to the very top.
The cosmetics market almost always rolls back after sudden movements: the first wave of buyers leaves, but sellers remain. The rule is simple - do not buy something that has grown by tens of percent in recent days. Wait a couple of weeks and see if the price holds.
3. Trusting a price chart alone
A beautiful growth on the chart with three sales per week does not mean anything. A couple of trades move the median, and the picture looks convincing, although there is nothing behind it.
Always look at the volume along with the price, and the order book along with the chart. If there are no buyers in the order book, there will be no one to sell at the stated price.
4. Tying up your budget in illiquid items
A rare item purchased “for growth” may remain on sale for a year. All this time the money is not working, and you can neither buy a good position nor exit without a discount.
At the start, take only what is sold daily. Liquidity is more important than potential margin because the margin on an untradable item only exists on paper.
5. Treating Steam balance as cash
Classic: buy a skin for rubles on a third-party site and “sell at a higher price” in Steam. The number is really higher, but you received a balance of Steam, which cannot be cashed out. This is not profit, but the conversion of money into a currency with limited use.
You can only compare homogeneous things: rubles with rubles, balance with balance.
6. Neglecting account security
Not having a mobile authenticator costs fifteen days of hold on each exchange. The email password that matches the Steam password is worth the entire account.
Separately: visiting sites using links from the chat, launching sent programs, entering Steam data on third-party sites. One such error resets your entire inventory, and no trading strategy can compensate for this.
7. Trading without records
Without a table, you don't know your result. Memory is designed in such a way that successful trades are remembered, and losing ones are forgotten, so almost every beginner is sure that he is in the black.
For each transaction, write down the date, the item, the purchase price, the sale price and the period the item has been around. Once a week, look at the total result, and not at individual transactions.
8. Risking money you need
The skins market is volatile and owes nothing to anyone. Money that is needed for something real cannot be kept here - at the moment when it is needed, you will have to sell it at any price.
And separately about borrowed funds: they should not be in this story at all. Not in any volume and under any certainty in a specific transaction.
- A trading budget is only that amount, the loss of which will not change anything.
- Leave part of your budget free, otherwise you won’t be able to buy a good position.
- One security mistake is worth more than a year of successful trading.
Frequently asked questions
Which mistake is the most costly?
Neglecting account security. Any trading mistake costs part of the budget, and losing an account costs everything at once.
Why am I in the red even though I sell for more than I buy?
Most likely you don't take into account the commission. The sale must be at least 15% more expensive than the purchase in order to break even.
Should you buy a skin, which has risen sharply?
Usually not. After sharp movements, the cosmetics market more often rolls back than continues to grow.
Is it necessary to keep a transaction journal?
Yes, otherwise you won’t know your real result. Without accounting, almost everyone is sure that they are trading in profit.
How many trades does it take to learn?
It's not a matter of quantity, but of analysis. A few trades with recorded reasons yield more than dozens of random ones.

How much money do you need to start trading skins?
Why does mathematics not work on a small budget, what is really available at 3, 15 and 50 thousand and how many transactions are needed for the budget to grow noticeably.
