How to buy CS2 skins for less: four approaches

Establish a fair price first

Without a base, the word “cheaper” means nothing. Open the item page, look at completed sales for a couple of weeks and the current order book. The reference point is not the cheapest lot and not the most expensive, but the level around which transactions actually take place.

Separately, write down how much the item costs in Steam and how much on a third-party site in rubles. These are two different numbers, and confusing them is the most common reason for “bargain” purchases that were not such.

Method 1: use a buy order

Instead of taking the cheapest item, place a buy order just below it and wait. Sooner or later, someone will need money quickly, and he will put up an item at your price.

This only works on items with good turnover: lots appear there constantly. For a rare item, the buy order may hang around for a month in vain.

An important limitation: a random copy comes through the buy order. For cases, stickers and standard skins this does not matter; for the purchase of a specific float it is not suitable.

Method 2: choose your timing

Supply on the market is growing in waves. After the release of a new case or operation, people open and display content en masse - prices for new items are usually inflated in the first weeks, but old ones can drop because everyone is selling them for the sake of the new one.

Large sales of Steam also move the market: some players sell off skins to buy games. During such periods, supply is higher than usual.

It is impossible to guess the exact moment, and there is no point in trying. The rule is enough: do not buy on sharp growth. If an item has risen in price by 30% in a week for no clear reason, wait - the cosmetics market almost always rolls back.

Method 3: consider a different exterior

There are price steps between states, and they don't always correspond to differences in appearance. Minimal Wear with float 0.14 and Field-Tested with float 0.16 differ minimally by eye, but noticeably in price.

Therefore, instead of buying MW at the MW price, it makes sense to look for FT at the very bottom of the range. It looks almost the same, and is priced at a cheaper price.

The same technique also works in the opposite direction when selling: such lots go faster than usual.

Method 4: compare total costs

Prices on different sites do differ, but you need to compare the result, not the price tag. The calculation includes the purchase commission, the balance replenishment commission, the conversion rate and the locking period of the item.

Calculate this way: how much money will be spent on the card for the item to be in your inventory. This is the only number that can be compared between sites.

And remember about the blocking: skin, purchased on the site, often cannot be resold for a week. If you need it tomorrow, “cheaper” becomes “not available.”

When a lower price is a trap

A price well below the market almost always means one of three things: the item is not what it is claimed to be; the site will not pay; or you are taken into a personal transaction where there is no protection.
