Choosing a CS2 skin: a checklist before buying

Whether a skin is a good purchase depends on your purpose. An ideal skin to use in game may be a poor choice for resale, and vice versa. Before checking prices, decide honestly why you want it.
A good skin depends on why you need it. We look at three scenarios - for gaming, for resale and for collection - and what to check in each before paying.
Three different reasons to buy
For the game, it is important how skin looks on your screen. Price is secondary, liquidity is not important at all.
For resale, exactly the opposite is important: how quickly and close to the market the item will go. Beauty doesn't matter if people don't buy it.
Rare parameters and proven demand from a narrow audience are important for the collection. Here you can afford illiquid assets, but you need to understand that the money is frozen for a long time.
Mixing scripts is the most common mistake. “I’ll buy a beautiful one, then sell it for more” usually ends with the fact that skin is beautiful, but it’s impossible to sell it for your own money.
Buying a skin to use
Look at skin as you would see it in battle, not on display. From a first-person perspective, you can see mainly the barrel part on one side - you will never see the drawing on the butt. The stickers in the slots closer to the butt are meaningless for the same reason.
Check readability: some bright coatings blend into the scope or make it difficult to see the point of impact. Watch the first-person video of this skin before purchasing - it's two minutes that saves money.
By condition: the difference between Minimal Wear and Field-Tested at the lower limit is often not visible at all, and the price differs noticeably. Take FT with float around 0.16 and spend the savings on something else.
Buying for resale
The first is volume. Open the chart and see the number of trades. Less than ten a week - pass by, you won’t find a buyer in a reasonable time.
The second is the spread. The gap between the best bid and the cheapest lot should be narrow. A wide spread means that if you sell urgently, you will lose more than you earn.
Third, the price is clear. If the item is typical and its copies are interchangeable, it is easy for both the buyer and you to evaluate it. skin, whose price is based on the rare pattern, can only be sold to someone who understands this, and there are few of them.
And consider the commission right away: a sale in Steam must be at least 15% more expensive than a purchase in order to break even.
- Liquidity is more important than potential margin. A large margin on illiquid assets is paper profit.
- Don’t resell something you don’t understand just because it “looks rare.”
- Check the price in the market where you will actually sell.
Checklist before paying
The full name and condition match what you were looking for. float of a specific lot has been verified and not taken from a screenshot. pattern is checked if it is important for this coverage. The stickers are read in the checker, not from the picture. The price is verified against completed sales, not against the most expensive item. There is an understanding of when and where you will sell. And the item has the exchange block checked.
If at least one point is not closed, the purchase will wait. There are more good offers on the market than there is money in the budget, there is no rush.
Frequently asked questions
Which skins suit a first-time buyer?
Liquid, inexpensive and on weapons you actually play with. This item is easy to value and easy to sell if you change your mind.
Is an expensive skin a sensible investment?
Cosmetics do not guarantee growth. Expensive items are also less liquid - it is more difficult to sell them quickly and at the right price.
How can I tell whether a price is fair?
Compare with completed sales of the same item in the same condition in recent weeks, not with prices of listed lots.
Which matters more: float or pattern?
Depends on the coverage. On Case Hardened and Doppler, pattern solves, on most others - condition and float.
Can I buy a skin and immediately resell it?
No. After purchasing on the site, the item is blocked for seven days.
