CS2 float value: wear ranges and when it matters

Float is the wear value of a particular skin, generally expressed as a number from 0 to 1. It belongs to that individual item. Playing with a skin does not gradually wear it out or lower its condition.

Learn what float means, the five exterior ranges and how to inspect a specific CS2 skin. Understand when a lower number can justify a premium.

01

Float and exterior are related, but different

The usual exterior bands are Factory New below 0.07, Minimal Wear from 0.07 to below 0.15, Field-Tested from 0.15 to below 0.38, Well-Worn from 0.38 to below 0.45 and Battle-Scarred from 0.45 upwards. Individual finishes can have narrower possible float ranges, so not every skin exists in all five exteriors.

Exterior is a broad label, while float identifies wear within that label. A Field-Tested item near 0.15 can look very different from one near 0.38. Appearance also depends on the finish: two different skins with identical float values need not show the same amount of visible scratching. Inspect the actual item rather than judging by a generic market thumbnail.

02

Check the specific listing before paying extra

Use the item’s inspect link to open it in CS2, then review its detailed information and appearance. Verify that the inspected item is the one in the listing or trade. A screenshot supplied by a seller may depict another copy. Checking wear does not require sharing your Steam password, authenticator code or API key.

A lower float is not automatically worth more within the same exterior. A premium needs a reason: a visibly cleaner example, an unusually low or high collectible number, or demand for a particular finish. Compare equivalent items and credible sales. A premium written in a seller’s description proves only what that seller hopes to receive, not what another buyer will pay you later.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does float change when I play?

No. Normal gameplay does not change the wear value of an existing skin.

Is the lowest float always the best purchase?

No. Consider the visible difference, the finish, comparable prices and your purpose. Paying for an extreme number may not make sense for a skin you only want to use in game.
