CS2 skin rarity: what the colors mean

CS2 skin rarity: what the colors mean

The color of the bar under an item shows its place in the rarity ladder - that is, how often it drops relative to other items from the same source. That's the only thing it shows. Color does not determine the price, and this is where almost all beginners make mistakes.

At a glance

A complete ladder of rarity with colors, how rarity differs from quality and wear and why blue skin from the old collection can cost more than red from the new one.

01

Rarity tiers

In ascending order: white - consumer goods, blue - industrial quality, blue - military quality, purple - prohibited, pink - classified, red - secret. Above all the gold ones are special items, that is, knives and gloves.

Inside one case, this ladder works literally: the higher you go on the list, the less often it appears. The odds are known and published: the vast majority of openings come from blue objects, red ones occur in less than one percent of cases, and knives in a quarter of a percent.

There is a separate category for smuggling. The only item that hit her was an M4A4 | Howl, which was removed from circulation after a dispute with the author of the drawing. No new specimens appear, and this is the only case of this kind.

02

Why red does not always mean more expensive

Rarity works within a single source. Red from case is indeed less common than purple from the same case. But it makes no sense to compare between different cases and collections.

The price is determined by the relationship between supply and demand. The red skin from the unpopular case, which is opened by millions, may cost less than the purple one from the old collection, which no longer drops and which everyone wants.

Add to this the appearance: nondescript red loses to spectacular blue simply because people want to buy the second one. The market votes with money, not with a rarity table.

Remember
  • Compare prices, not colors.
  • Old collections with a closed inflow are valued higher, all other things being equal.
  • The beautiful blue skin may be more liquid than the rare red.
03

Rarity, quality and wear are different

Rarity is a color, a position on the drop ladder. Never changes.

Quality, or item type, is a separate axis: regular, StatTrak™, or souvenir. The StatTrak version of the same skin is rarer than the usual one, and the souvenir version exists only for items from tournament sets. Type and rarity are not interchangeable: there is a red StatTrak and a blue StatTrak.

Worn - Condition ranging from Factory New to Battle-Scarred, determined by float. It has nothing to do with rarity at all: Battle-Scarred red remains red.

Plus the parameters of a specific instance: float, pattern, stickers. They are not visible in color at all, and sometimes they influence the price more than anything else combined.

Using this information

Color is good for quick orientation in your inventory: to understand what is at the top of the list in terms of potential value. Then it is useless.

To evaluate, open the item page and see real prices and sales volume. Five seconds on a chart will do more than any discussion of rarity.

And don’t buy anything with the wording “it’s red.” This is exactly the argument used to sell illiquid assets at exorbitant prices.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What do skin rarity colors mean in CS2?

They show rarity: white, blue, blue, purple, pink, red and gold for knives and gloves. This is the drop frequency, not the price.

Is a red-rarity skin always more expensive than a purple one?

No. Within one case - yes, but between different collections the price is determined by supply and demand, not color.

How does rarity differ from quality?

Rarity is the color and drop frequency. Quality or type - regular, StatTrak or souvenir. These are independent characteristics.

Can an item’s rarity change?

No. It is set during creation and remains unchanged, just like float and pattern.

What is Contraband rarity?

A special category in which the only item included was the M4A4 Howl, which was removed from circulation. New instances do not appear.
