Why a Steam item cannot be traded or sold

A missing Sell button, a locked item and an account-wide market restriction are different problems. Start with the exact message Steam displays. It usually tells you more than a generic countdown copied from a forum.
Distinguish an item restriction from an account restriction. Find the availability date and learn what to check before attempting another trade.
Locate the restriction before trying to fix it
Select the item in your inventory and read its description, including any ‘Tradable after’ or ‘Marketable after’ date. Tradable and marketable are separate properties: an item can support one action without supporting the other. Some rewards or account-bound items never gain those options.
If the same problem affects every otherwise eligible item, check the account’s Community Market and trade pages. Recent security changes, account limitations, payment issues or enforcement actions can restrict an account independently of an item’s own timer. An item becoming available does not remove an account-wide restriction, and removing one restriction does not necessarily remove the other.
Use the displayed date and official recovery route
Read the full notice in the signed-in Steam interface and follow the linked official help page. Note which time zone the interface is using. If the message describes a temporary restriction, changing devices or repeatedly removing security features can create additional problems rather than shorten it.
Do not pay someone to ‘unlock’ an item or send it in a verification trade. A stranger cannot override Steam’s restrictions. If the notice is unclear, preserve its wording and contact Steam Support through the official site. Check availability before agreeing to a sale so that you do not promise immediate delivery of an item that cannot currently move.
Frequently asked questions
Can an extension remove a trade restriction?
No. A browser extension cannot override the trading rules enforced by Steam’s servers.
Why is an item tradable but not marketable?
Trading and Community Market sales use separate eligibility rules. Read both properties in the item description rather than assuming they are identical.
